Humans In Virtual Environments (HIVE) is a series of reading groups initiated with Sensorium Director, Joel Ong, in collaboration with various other faculty and graduate students, focusing on emerging and diffractive practices in the contemporary mediated sensorium. These reading groups will explore the sensorium progressively through specific thematics, vantage points and sensory or extra-sensory apparatuses.
Reading Group #3 — The Constitution of Smell
Group members: Eva Lu, Hrysovalanti (Fereniki) Maheras, Laurence Butet-Roch, Nick Fox-Gieg
Wednesday April 12, 2023 @ 3–4:30pm EST
Sensorium Loft Space (CFA 4th Floor, Room M333)
Zoom meeting (RSVP evalu@yorku.ca for link)
– How do emerging sensitivities to polysensory experiences alter our cultural imaginaries around the atmosphere and ongoing climate geo-intervention?
– How does the olfactory engender risk perception and the experience and production of socio-political difference?
– How does smell foster relationship and communication between human and non-human, whether invasive or symbiotic?
– What role does the desirability or toxicity of scents play in our embodied cultural and environmental understandings?
Join reading group core members in discussing a prepared selection of texts that will explore these questions through the lens of practices, metaphors, and philosophies. This hybrid meeting will synchronously be held in person at the Sensorium Loft as well as online via Zoom.
We welcome you to “bring a smell” for shared contemplation (in a well-sealed container please!).
Please RSVP to Eva Lu at evalu@yorku.ca to receive the bibliography and Zoom link.
