Marlis Schweitzer
Professor, Theatre & Performance Studies
Marlis Schweitzer is Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at York University. She is the author of When Broadway Was the Runway: Theater, Fashion and American Culture (2009), Transatlantic Broadway: The Infrastructural Politics of Global Performance (2015). Her most recent book, Bloody Tyrants and Little Pickles: Stage Roles of Anglo-American Girls in the Nineteenth Century (2020), received the George Freedley Memorial Award from the Theatre Library Association and was named a finalist for the 2021 Outstanding Book Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. With Laura Levin, Marlis is co-editor of Performance Studies in Canada, recipient of the 2018 Patrick O’Neill Award for best edited book. She is a member of the Royal Society College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists, and a Tier 2 York Research Chair in Theatre and Performance History. Marlis is past editor of Theatre Research in Canada and Theatre Survey, a former President of the Canadian Association for Theatre Research, and the current Chair of the Department of Theatre at York University.
